Deer Hunting Tips: 8 Scent Control Tips to Help You See More Deer

Deer has a very strong scent sense and that is why scent control is essential when you go out hunting. Many new hunters search why invest in quality hunting camo but they often forget the importance of scent control. In hunting, your first goal is to get close to your prey or at least get it in your sight to have a good aim. If you don’t use scent control, there are chances that the Deer will not come anywhere near you. This article will highlight the 8 top scent control tips to help you see more Deer on your hunting trip.

  • Scent Free Clothing

Deodorizing clothes with scent-removing detergent is important when you head out on your hunting expeditions. Before you put your clothes in the laundry machine, rinse the machine with some baking soda to make sure any residue left of the prior detergent is removed. You can always wash your hunting clothes by hand, using a bucket.

  • Boot Choice

If you have leather boots for your hunting trips, you might want to reconsider this decision. Leather has a very distinct smell that takes a long time to neutralize. New boots will have an even stronger smell. Rubber boots can be the perfect alternative for this purpose.

  • Personal Hygiene

Out in the wild, you might not have access to water every day to take fresh showers or baths, and scent-canceling deodorants are essential. The shampoo, the deodorant, and the toothpaste that you use all should be scent-canceling.

  • Pay Attention to What you Eat

Any food item that can cause smell afterward or is not easily digestible should be completely avoided. Avoid any caffeine products as well because it will cause more urination and you might defecate more too.

  • No Smoking or Vaping

Tobacco has a very strong smell and these kinds of smells are also not natural to the wild, so the Deer can very easily detect you in the wild. If you must smoke, make sure you carry them in an airtight container and use space far away from the place you are hunting, or else you will return with nothing.

  • Avoid Campfire Smoke

If you build a campfire, the smell of the burning wood will transfer to the clothes you are wearing. When you head to hunt in the same clothes, this will take your hunt away from you.

  • Use Scent Reduction Products

Any scent reduction product which could be your deodorant or your toothpaste, will help you cover up your scent tracks. Use a scent-reducing spray on your clothes and backpacks to make sure you do not leave any smell on your tracks.

  • Scent Covers

Earthy or deer-urine scents are the best kind of scent covers that can be used in the wild. These will not put off the Deer and also ensure that your scent is neutralized.

Deer hunting is a very demanding sport, and it is not very easy to mark one down. Follow the above mentioned scent control tips to make your next hunting trip a success.
