How To Maintain Your Ceiling Pendant

A ceiling pendant is a single light fixture that hangs from the ceiling by a metal rod or cord. These fixtures provide additional task lighting above kitchen tables and counters. They are also useful for reading areas in dens, living rooms, and home offices. Here are some tips for properly caring for your custom lighting fixture:

Turn the Light Off

Turn off your ceiling pendant and allow the bulb to cool for a few minutes before handling the fixture. Materials like glass bulbs may crack when there is a sudden change in temperature. Using a wet, cold rag on a hot bulb could cause it to shatter. Allowing the bulb to cool down first provides a safer environment for changing lightbulbs and cleaning the pendant.

Choose Ceiling Pendant Bulbs

Many custom lighting fixtures do not come with a bulb. Check the specifications list for your fixture to determine what type of bulb your pendant is designed for. Using an incorrect bulb could damage the pendant by causing it to overheat. If you’ve already thrown away the specifications manual, the designer’s website can provide you with a digital version.

One common bulb type that pendant lights use is an LED G9 bulb. Some manufacturers offer dimmable and non-dimmable versions. Dimmable bulbs run at a lower wattage to create smooth transitions of different brightness levels. Choose the correct lightbulb for your fixture and home’s electrical system to avoid malfunctions.

Avoid Chemical Cleaners

Harsh chemicals like bleach can damage a fixture’s finish, especially if the fixture is made with natural materials. Spray cleaners and polishers could alter the appearance of your pendant light. Use warm water and a soft rag to gently wipe the surface of your fixtures.

Dusters are also useful for cleaning custom lighting fixtures. Many dusters are extendable, allowing you to reach the pendant without a stepstool or ladder. Choose a duster made of microfiber material to remove particles from the top of the pendant.

Use Microfiber Cloths

Microfiber is a gentle, lint-free material that won’t scratch soft surfaces like natural stone, wood, or glass. An effective way to use a microfiber cloth is to dampen it with warm water. Wipe the surface of the pendant with the cloth, including the bulb and interior structure. This cleaning technique minimizes the possibility of streaking and collects more dust particles than a cotton rag.

Clean your custom lighting fixtures once a month to keep them in good condition. Fixtures in high-traffic areas like kitchens may require more frequent cleaning. Do not place fixtures in the dishwasher, as high temperatures could damage them. Confirm that all fixture components are completely dry before turning the light back on to avoid electrical hazards.

Learn More About Custom Lighting

Designers offer custom fixtures to bring dynamic lighting to each room in your home. You can improve the flow and function of your home by using multiple types of fixtures, such as table lamps and wall sconces. Contact a designer to learn more about their available lighting collections.
