An American Werewolf in London
Werewolf flicks have been popping up more and more over the years, but John Landis’ 1981 classic was easily one of the first mainstream werewolves we’d ever seen. He also handled this monster topic with a lot of heart, giving us an actual character instead of yet another beastly creature to fear. Plus it helped that he cast David Naughton (best known for “Benny Hill”) as Jack Taylor, who’s not only a werewolf but also happens to be gay. Just think about how much better it is than if they just made him into an evil straight man.
Dead Alive
British comedy legend Peter Jackson takes his turn directing a zombie movie in this infamous 1996 flick. This may be the closest we’ve gotten to getting through a zombie apocalypse unscathed, but unfortunately, that doesn’t make it any less scary or funny. With a terrific lead performance from Richard O’Brien, along with great cameos by Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee (who both seem oddly appropriate), there’s no way you won’t be cracking up during this one.
Shaun of the Dead
The most recent addition to this list, director Edgar Wright had already proven himself to be quite the skilled comedic filmmaker back when he made 2002’s Hot Fuzz. It’s hard to believe that he took nearly a decade to return to zombie territory with this film. But while it didn’t exactly connect with audiences in its opening weekend, it earned praise on DVD after its release.
