Tips on How We Can Teach Our Kids about Proper Waste Disposal

Garbage, Plastic Cups, Recycling, Waste

We have to leave a planet that is sustainable for our children – a world that they can enjoy living in – without pollution, trash and greenhouse gases that can affect their health. But in order to do that, we must take action now. The effects of global warming are affecting us in the worst way possible. We can enlist their help in preserving the environment because as young as they are, they can already ingrain in their minds the importance of being kind to nature. Here are some ways we can teach our kids about proper waste disposal.

Make throwing away trash fun

Put colored bins in your house, where they can put the biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable waste. Teach them which ones go in which bin. Colors entice the kids to do things, so why not use them in bins?

Encourage them to recycle

One way to encourage kids to recycle is to make them earn money from recycled waste. Tell them to gather recyclable materials in a container and take them to a recycling center to turn their waste into cash. They can do whatever they want with the money that they earn, like buy toys and video games.

Take them grocery shopping with you

Leading by example is the best way that you can teach your kids. When you make a trip to the grocery store, bring reusable bags where you can stash your purchases, as well as reusable containers where you can put fresh produce such as fish, meat and vegetables. You reduce plastic use with these practices.

Show them how to remove big junk

If you have trash that you need to dispose of, such as an old couch, a cabinet, and other household items, you can involve them in the task by letting them watch the Miami Beach junk removal company such as Evergreen Junk Removal pick up the trash and educate them where it goes and how the removal company handles it.

Make them watch educational videos

You can search for videos on the Internet that kids can easily understand that explain the importance of proper waste disposal and how it can help the environment.

Set an example

Kids do not learn by what we teach them; they learn by example. We have to be responsible for disposing of our waste. When they see that it is a regular habit, they will pick up on the practice and carry the habit into adulthood so that they will also teach future generations.

Let them pick up trash on the beach

During a beach outing, make sure to bring a trash bag and gloves with you. Go on a scavenger hunt with the kids and ask them to pick up trash they see on the beach. Make sure to let them wear gloves to avoid contact with any dirty or contaminated material. You can give them each a bag and whoever gets the most trash by the end of the hunt wins a prize.
