Short-term Rental Tips For Digital Nomads On Their Travels

In this ever-evolving digital age the potential for remote working is growing exponentially. More and more people are trading in the traditional 9-5 mould and working remotely, anywhere in the world, so long as they have a laptop and a WiFi connection.

This method of earning is relatively new and it is affording people the freedom to work and earn while they explore the world.

The life of a digital nomad has its benefits, but it certainly isn’t without its challenges. In this article, we’re going to share some short-term rental tips for digital nomads while on their travels.

1 – Plan in advance

While it is exciting to pack your bags and jet off to a new destination, it’s always worth doing plenty of research in advance. Turning up in a new country only to find that short-term rental properties are difficult to find will end up making your life far more difficult than it needs to be.

Join various expat Facebook groups and get in touch with the local community. This is a great way to put the feelers out and see what kind of accommodation is available.

2 – Examine the pictures carefully and have a viewing before committing

It’s not uncommon for property owners to try and glorify their properties with somewhat deceiving photos. A good example of this could be one picture of a bed and another of a sofa, leading you to believe there is a bedroom and a living room, when in reality it’s a sofa-bed in its different forms.

3 – Communicate your needs with the landlord

Be clear about your needs and communicate them to your prospective landlord. You should also find out what items will be staying in the apartment. Some items in the pictures may be removed at the last minute, which can be frustrating.

4 – Always read the reviews

Make sure that you thoroughly examine the reviews to get a good idea as to how reliable the landlord is – and indeed what the property is like to live in.

5 – Don’t make any assumptions

Assuming that a property has WiFi connected is a costly mistake, particularly if you are a digital nomad. Make a list of everything that you need and then ask if it will be available before signing anything.

6 – Location is everything

You don’t want to be too far removed from the action. Check the map and ensure that you have a few local shops and restaurants around you. Similarly, it’s handy to have a co-working space in the area should you want to get out of the apartment and mix up the scenery.

7 – Be open to all property types

Don’t limit yourself. Keep yourself open to all property types and you never know what opportunities you might find. Check out these cheap dormitories to rent from DDproperty, as an example.

The takeaway

Keep your wits about you and negotiate with confidence. You should also make sure that you properly manage your money when travelling so you have enough savings behind you to pay for several months up front. Many short-term rental property owners may ask that you pay for the full duration in advance.

In any case, travel safe and have a blast!
